On account of the invitation from the part of the Goethe Institute and the Humboldt Association, the intercultural exhibition project “Infraestructura I – IV” (2005/2006) led him to Quito, Guayaquil and Cuenca in Ecuador with an exhibition trilogy. For the time being, it was the last project where Klie directly referred his work to social phenomena.
For the exhibition, he developed a multi-media conception in four spaces (sculpture, digital photography, computer-generated pictures, video- and audio-installation). With the view of the foreigner from abroad, he asked the question about identity constructs in Ecuador, making seem history and the present time always dependent on the selected perspective. According to Rudolf Kalkbrenners introduction in the catalogue, Klie was concerned with “… the mental infrastructure of the country. (…) Some original “cultural sources” of identity have vanished – others have become visible and the momentary way predominantly envisaged a further growth of necessary material. (…) Here, the perspective of the artist is in exhibiting and making perceptible, but not in judging”.
The centre of the exhibition constitutes 40 computer-generated pictures “Cualidades, virtudes y vicios” (“Qualities, virtues and vices”), representing, combined with concepts, a compendium of contradictions of economicmaterial, cultural-mental and human-mental data. Klie quoted the manner of surreal photo-text-combination. He wrote in the catalogue: ”Qualities, virtues and vices seldom form a fortunate synthesis – and the horizon of this difficulty is not only bases on the spectator and his perspective, but also on the person being viewed and his consciousness to be viewed.”
